Michael Snow (1929-2023) was born in Toronto and studied at the Ontario College of Art. As a filmmaker, Snow’s widely acclaimed Wavelength (1967) and La Région Centrale (1971) remain important avant-garde-cinema works. Through the 1960s, while living in New York, Snow also produced his noted Walking Woman series, a succession of paintings, sculptures, and photographs exploring and reconsidering the treatment of the figure in art.

Having studied at the Ontario College of Art in his native Toronto, Snow travelled in Europe in the 1950s and lived in New York in the 1960s. Following his return to Canada in the 1970s, Snow engaged with various forms in an exploration of perception, representation, language, and sound through visual art, experimental film, and music.

Snow’s contributions to three spheres of cultural activity - visual art, experimental film, and music - have been recognized internationally. His honours include the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture (1995), the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2000), and the Gershon Iskowitz Prize (2011).
